A decade of design with Macmillan Cancer Support
I worked with Macmillan Cancer Support on over 170 creative projects between 2010–2020, playing a part in helping Macmillan increase their income by 61%, reach 69% more people and raise spend on cancer services by 71% / £74.9m.

“Working with Paul is a pleasure. He’s a true professional, who takes time to thoroughly understand a brief, provides a clear and fully costed proposal, communicates clearly throughout and, most importantly, really delivers. You can always trust Paul to hit the core of the brief, and to bring that little bit of creative flair on top.”

Three dimensional interactive nurse installation
Scope: concepts, design development, sourcing installation production supplier, artwork for production.
The concept
A life size nurse installation, with hinged arms that act as a balancing scale / seesaw.
The problems that nurses are facing are represented as blocks, to be placed on the left hand of the nurse – tipping the scales over to the left.
When the solutions blocks are each added to the right hand of the nurse, the scale begins to balance. When all the blocks are added to the installation, the scales perfectly balance.
The build
Working closely with Macmillan throughout the process, delivering a range of production options to consider. Once we had found a suitable third party to manufacture the nurse installation, scaled drawings were created, which went through various iterations. We oversaw artwork and production, with Standard8 being commissioned to build and deliver the installation.
Images kindly provided by Standard8.
The delivery
Our nurse was delivered directly to the Labour party conference, which took place in London in September 2019.
The reaction
Our nurse fondly became named “Bella”, and engaged many of the attendees at the Labour party conference. This included Labour MP Sir George Howarth, pictured below.
“Paul is one of the best people to work with.”

“Paul was great to work with,he absorbed all of the information provided in our brief, and helped us to understand and assess the options available for the project. He always responded to our questions promptly and turned round changes very efficiently. The final version looked excellent and enabled us to complete an effective test of the functionality needed. I would be more than happy to recommend his work, and indeed to work with him again.”

Inspiring Millions brand campaign
In collaboration with VCCP, a large number of digital formats were created as part of Macmillan’s “Inspiring Millions” brand campaign in 2013.
“Paul was briefed to do all the online creative for our national integrated advertising campaign. It was a vast set of formats all of which had to be designed from scratch. We had just been through a rebrand too and guidelines weren’t yet complete. Paul was tasked with finding a way to use the refreshed style online. Throughout, Paul worked above and beyond, to ensure work was delivered on time and on brief. He was quick to respond with a range of ideas and executed final designs with excellent attention to detail and crafting. Paul was a delight to work with and I’m really looking forward to working with him again.”
